Bluebloods : Inglis Easter Yearling Sale 2013
23 EASTER PREVIEW 2013 AUSTRALIAN EASTER YEARLING SALE Gr.1 wins included the Caul eld Guineas at three, the L.K.S. Mackinnon, George Ryder and een Elizabeth Stakes at four and the Australian Cup, C.F Orr and George Ryder Stakes as a ve year-old. Bred by Woodlands and racing in the Ingham family s familiar cerise livery, Lonhro epitomised all that is good about thorough- bred racing. He never ducked a ght, was always the testing material at the highest level and was the best in Australia for three consecutive seasons. Given such a stellar racetrack career it was understandable that he was popular with breeders when he stood his rst-season in 2004 at a fee of $60,000. It is a testament to their sire that stakes winners from his rst crop like Pinwheel and Skytrain are still racing competitively this season and another Group winner from his rst crop, O Lonhro, has his rst yearlings selling this year. e Champion Sire of 2010-11 as well as being the Champion Sire of Two Year-Olds in 2011-12 Lonhro has sired 36 stakes winners from 463 progeny to race, headed by Gr.1 winners Pierro, Denman, Mental, Beaded and Ben ca, the last named, like Lonhro and Denman, is at stud under the Darley banner. REDOUTE'S CHOICE Redoute s Choice ( 96, Danehill-Shantha s Choice by Canny Lad) showcased his prodigious talent in stunning fashion, winning the Listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes over 1100m at Caul eld on debut and then defeating Testa Rossa in the Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 at just his second start. At three he went on to win another three times at Gr.1 level in the Caul eld Guineas and the Manikato and the C.F. Orr Stakes, retiring to Arrow eld Stud in 2000. He got the 1000 Guineas winner Lo eria in his rst crop and since then has spawned a further 20 winners at the highest level includ- ing the females Miss Finland, Samantha Miss, Melito and King s Rose. His Gr.1-winning sons Snitzel and Stratum have made promising starts at stud along with Not A Single Doubt, and all three have strong representation at the Easter sale in 2103. Redoute s Choice has 97 stakes winners from 852 progeny to race, be er than the 10% strike rate acknowledged as the benchmark for superior stallions. In 2013 he makes history by covering the northern hemisphere season at the Aga Khan s Haras de Bonneval in France. ZABEEL ere is, it would seem, nothing that Zabeel has le to accomplish at stud. Given that it was accepted that no stallion could surpass Sir Tristram s 130 stakes winners from 999 runners, it is appropriate that the horse to do so is none other than his Gr.1-winning son, who also stands at Cambridge Stud in NZ, following on from his sire for Sir Patrick Hogan. Winner of the Australian Guineas-Gr.1 at three and the Craiglee Stakes-Gr.2. at four, Zabeel s penchant for Flemington has also extended to his o spring. E cient, Jezabeel and Might And Power won the Melbourne Cup, Octagonal the Australian Cup, Reset, Mouawad and Dignity Dancer the Australian Guineas, Champagne the L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes. We could go on. Zabeel ( 86 Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle by Nureyev) has sired 143 stakes winners from 1354 o spring to race with 42 Gr.1 winners, a phenomenal achievement. He has been Champion Sire in Australia twice, four times the Champion Sire in New Zealand as well as Champion sire of Broodmares in Australia as well as New Zealand. His sons Savabeel and Reset have already sired Gr.1 winners and both have representation at the 2013 Easter Sale. To think that there is a yearling sale where no fewer than 20 of the 58 stallions represented to have had runners have headed a sires' classification is truly remarkable. That the sale is here in Australia certainly underlines the elevation of Australian racing to the top table of global racing. Encosta de Lago Lonhro Fastnet Rock Redoute's Choice Flying Spur Zabeel
