Bluebloods : Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale 2013
combined in the first five generations of a pedigree, according to Arion statistics, the Jeune/Blevic cross has produced 62.5% winners/runners. Alcopop's dam Iota of Luck (1997) is out of the At Talaq (USA) (1981, Roberto-My Nord by Vent du Nord) mare, Petite Luck (1990). The combination of these two imported Melbourne Cup winners, Jeune and At Talaq, has a stunning success rate in pedigrees: 51 named foals, 43 runners, 34 winners (79.1% of runners), five Group winners (including the five-time Gr.1 winner Mummify) and seven stakes winners (16.3% SW/runners). Of the seven stakes winners, six are by Jeune out of At Talaq mares and the seventh, Alcopop, is by Jeune, with At Talaq as the sire of his second dam, a remarkable affinity. The lesson for breeders is clear: have no fear in building a pedigree around the bloodlines of Derby and Melbourne Cup winners. Note that among the recent Cup winners, Shocking (2005, Street Cry (IRE)-Maria Di Castiglia (GB) by Danehill (USA)) now stands at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand and Americain (USA) (2005, Dynaformer-America, by Arazi (USA)) will shuttle to Swettenham Stud, Victoria next season. The formula at Princes Farm is quite similar. The Cummings method is to pile quality staying blood on to quality staying blood. Several of his broodmares come from the female family of Saintly (1992, Sky Chase (NZ)-All Grace (NZ) by Sir Tristram (IRE)), the 1996 Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup hero, pensioned off at the farm, on the day of my visit, a mud-splattered warrior calmly pacing the back paddock with his mate Swick (winner of the 2008 Patinack Farm Classic-Gr.1). Saintly comes from an outstanding Australian family, that of Cymbala (GB) (1912, Robert Le Diable- Seraphine by Cyllene). Its modern matriarch has been Dark Queen (1964, Coronation Boy (IRE)-Solar Eclipse by Sun Storm (GB), fourth dam Cymbala), Saintly's fourth dam. Dark Queen's Gr.1-winning descendants include Taj Rossi (1970), Dark Eclipse (1977), Tributes (1996), Preserve (1997), God's Own (2002) and Denman (2006). Cummings' strategy over the past two seasons has been to mate his Dark Queen-line mares to Roman Emperor. In some cases, this has produced a double cross of the breed-shaping stallion, Sir Tristram (IRE) (the sire of Saintly's dam All Grace and Roman Emperor's second damsire Grosvenor (NZ)). After a slow start, line breeding to Sir Tristram is becoming more successful, with a winners/runners ratio of 51%. As Bart Cummings says, breed to Roman Emperor and wait five years!
