KARAKA 2012 YEARLING SALE PREVIEW 48 E ESTABLISHED in 1949 by the late Arthur Fell on a property they had farmed since 1910, the Palmerston North nursery continues to make its mark in the sale ring and across the racetracks of Australasia and Asia. “ Fairdale is the oldest stud in the same family ownership to still be selling at the National Yearling Sales,” said Gerald Fell, whose son Duncan is now responsible for the day-to-day running of the property. “ We’ve bred the winners of 195 stakes races in 14 countries.” Melbourne Cup winner and Australian Horse of the Year Hyperno, the champion South African filly Petrava and the Auckland and Adelaide Cups winner Zavite are among the outstanding thoroughbreds to have been bred and sold by the farm. Featuring prominently in the pedigree of the multiple Gr.1 winner Petrava is Pakistan II (GB) (Palestine-Tambara by Nasrullah), who was imported to stand at Fairdale in 1963 and he was crowned Champion Two Year Old Sire with his first crop and went on the to win the Champion New Zealand Sire title three times, as well as a trio of Dewar Stallion Awards for combined Australian and New Zealand progeny earnings. Pakistan II died prematurely at 13, but his influence is still evident and Fairdale continues to successfully breed from the families of his daughters. The impressive roll of honour at the farm features the winners of the Melbourne, Caulfield, Australian, Brisbane and Adelaide Cups, the Cox Plate, VRC 1000 Guineas and Epsom Handicap and at home includes the New Zealand Derby, Oaks, 1000 Guineas, Railway and Telegraph Handicaps. The current stallion line up has the accent firmly on youth and building for continued success with the Australian Derby-Gr.1 winner Nom du Jeu (NZ) (Montjeu (IRE)-Prized Gem by Prized (USA)) having his first foals on the ground, while the progeny of Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 FAIRDALE STUD Still making history Fairdale Stud owns a unique slice of New Zealand thoroughbred breeding history with its longevity a glowing testament to three generations of management by the Fell family.
