KARAKA 2012 YEARLING SALE PREVIEW 12 FRESHMAN SIRES ALAMOSA (NZ) 2004 brown, O'Reilly (NZ)-Lodore Mystic by Centaine (AUS) Stands: Wellfield Lodge, Palmerston North Alamosa won at the highest level at two, three and four and earned Champion NZ Three Year Old honours in his classic year. Successful in the Diamond Stakes as a juvenile, he beat the older horses the following season in the Thorndon Mile at Trentham and in track record time in the Otaki-Maori WFA. As a four year-old he returned home from Australia with the Toorak Handicap- Gr.1 title to his credit and placed in the Orr and Futurity Stakes. He is a by the Champion Stallion O'Reilly and with his dam a daughter of the Champion Broodmare Sire Centaine, he is bred on a proven stakes-producing cross. ASTRONOMER ROYAL (USA) 2004 bay, Danzig-Sheepscot by Easy Goer Stands: Eliza Park, Kerrie A Champion Three Year Old Miler in France, Astronomer Royal’s career highlight was his victory in the French 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 at Longchamp. He was also successful in the Greenham Stakes-Gr 3 at the Curragh and was placed in both the St James’s Palace Stakes-Gr.1 at Ascot and the July Cup-Gr.1 at Newmarket. The son of Danzig retired as the winner of three of his 14 appearances. Astronomer Royal is a half-brother to the Pan American-Gr.2 winner Navesink River, with their dam a stakeswinning daughter of Easy Goer. This is also the family of the Florida Derby-Gr.1 and Fountain of Stakes-Gr.1 winner Vicar. AUTHORIZED (IRE) 2004 bay, Montjeu (IRE)-Funsie by Saumarez Stands: Darley, Kelvinside He only raced seven times but this son of Montjeu made a stunning impact with a hat trick of victories at the very highest level. He was successful in the Racing Post Trophy at two and in his classic year he claimed the English Derby and the Juddmonte International Stakes to be crowned the Champion European Three Year Old of 2007. His maternal grandsire Saumarez was an Arc de Triomphe winner and Authorized hails from the family of Green Dancer (Prix Lupin-Gr.1, French 2000 Guineas-Gr1, Trophy Stakes-Gr.1), Okawango ( Jean-Luc Lagardere-Gr.1) and Quijano (Grosser Prix von Baden-Gr.1, Gran Premio di Milano-Gr.1). DANFIVE (AUS) 2002 bay, Danehill (USA)-Eyes of Belief by Sadler’s Wells Danfive was a well-performed sprinter in Hong Kong where he won five of his nine starts up to 1200m. His mother, by the great Sadler’s Wells, is a sister to Insight (EP Taylor Stakes-Gr.1) and Saffron Walden (Irish 2000 Guineas-Gr.1) and a half-sister to the successful sire Dolphin Street (Prix de la Foret-Gr.1). Danfive is now retired from stud duty. DUKE OF MARMALADE (IRE) 2004 bay, Danehill (USA)-Love Me True by Kingmambo Stands: Coolmore Stud, Jerrys Plains The last great son of Danehill, Duke of Marmalade claimed a swag of Gr.1 titles including the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Juddmonte International Stakes, Prince of Wales’s Stakes, Prix Ganay and the Tattersalls Gold Cup. He was also placed in the St James’s Palace Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as well as finishing fourth in the English and Irish 2000 Guineas and the Juddmonte. The Champion Older Horse of Europe in 2008, his winning dam is from the great stallion family of A.P. Indy, Lemon Drop Kid and Summer Squall. EL HERMANO (NZ) 2005 bay, Pins (AUS)-Palos Verdes by Oak Ridge (FR) Stands: Cheval Stud, Te Awamutu El Hermano was unraced due to an injury, but he has a proven pedigree with his sire Pins an Australian Guineas-Gr.1 winner and a prolific source of top quality performers throughout Australasia and Asia. El Hermano is out of the Oak Ridge mare Palos Verdes and is therefore a brother to the outstanding El Segundo (Cox Plate, Yalumba Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Orr Stakes) who was joint head of the 2006-07 Australasian 4YO+ Classification. The mare has also left a further three winners. SPOILT FOR CHOICE AS NEW BOYS ARE CREAM OF THE CROP Buyers will be spoilt for choice at Karaka in 2012 as the freshman sires are a high class bunch, featuring unbeaten juveniles, champion milers, classic winners and champion sprinters. Their yearlings are sure to be in strong demand from domestic and international buyers. Here is the “potted form” on the new boys.
