Bluebloods : Karaka 2012 Yearling Sale Preview
KARAKA 2012 YEARLING SALE PREVIEW 8 NZB THE TEAM at New Zealand Bloodstock There are a number of people who can call the beautiful grounds of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Sales Complex their workplace. 30 individuals each play a vital role in making New Zealand Bloodstock a successful business, from inspecting the horses prior to a sale to booking accommodation for clients. A AT the helm of NZB are co-Managing Directors Petrea Vela and Andrew Seabrook with their responsibilities split between Petrea heading up the auction sale business and marketing function while Andrew’s focus is on the local bloodstock team and finance department. Not all of the NZB staff drive in the gates at Karaka each morning, Mike Kneebone, NZB’s Director of Bloodstock & Sales Asia, now calls Singapore home after making the move two years ago to establish the NZB Singapore office. Mike’s fellow auctioneer and bloodstock agent Clint Donovan has now settled into the town of Cambridge as the company’s representative in the Waikato region. Flying the NZB flag in Australia is Sydney- based Richard Haynes while in Victoria ex-jockey and man-about-Melbourne Brent Thomson is the local representative. During the sales you will see both Mike and Clint up on the rostrum auctioneering alongside Chairman Joe Walls and Trackside personality Steve Davis. John Cameron and Danny Rolston complete the NZB bloodstock team, and it is a rare occasion when these two are in the office around inspection time as they clock up miles visiting studs to view horses. Ensuring that the NZB message reaches far and wide is the marketing team; Marketing Executive Jessie Gower focuses on advertising and sponsorship while Marketing Assistant Michael Orton writes the press releases and keeps an eye on NZB’s successful graduates. Visitors to Karaka are well looked after with Hospitality Co-ordinator Victoria Vela managing everything from accommodation bookings to transport requirements or dinner recommendations. Behind the scenes James Jennings NZB’s Auction and IT Manager organises all of the stabling, logistics and cataloguing for the Sales, while the place to go for the full complement of NZB services during a sale is the Sales Day Office. There you can find Finance Manager Ross Gwyn,Airfreight Manager Greg Northcott, Insurance Manager Jim Bruford and their teams providing 360 degrees of service for vendors and buyers throughout the sales. Every step from buyer registration through to consigning a horse to its new home, even if the destination is offshore, can be managed here. Around the corner at reception Faye Hunt and her team look after general enquiries and provide results, internet access, taxi bookings, luggage storage, catalogues and even sun block! Faye is the familiar voice that most clients hear when contacting NZB. A team of outdoor staff work year-round to ensure the sales complex looks immaculate, maintaining the signature NZB flower beds, touching up the buildings and cleaning out the horseboxes. Based at the ‘Green Barn’ Clem van Gessel heads up this team and he is also the man who has the mammoth task of co-ordinating the feed for in excess of 800 horses during the height of the sales. There are many other key members of the NZB team that take great pride in their company and their work and will go out of their way to make any visitor to Karaka feel welcome. Come and meet the team for yourself at Karaka 2012. ■ Victoria Vela Michael Orton and Sadler’s Wells (l-r) Jessie Gower, Brent Thomson and Duncan Ramage Petrea Vela Andrew Seabrook KARAKA 2012
