Bluebloods : Feb 2011 Issue - Sale Previews
February 2011 21 MUSK CREEK Farm might be on debut at the Melbourne Premier Sale, but the Victorian farm has been founded on years of experience in the breeding and racing industry. The 57ha (140 acre) property at Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula has been developed as a premier thoroughbred establishment and offers sales preparation, spelling, broodmare care and foaling. "We have been working on the property for the past two years and developed it from scratch," manager Dee Chomatek said. "Our aim is to breed and sell quality racehorses, and we can offer the full range of services including racehorse agistment." Dee started her career at Fulmen Park and during that time furthered her experience at the famed American stud Taylor Made. She then spent four years at Arrowfield Stud, where she specialised in yearling preparation, and further enjoyed a stint at Newsells Park in England. David Kobritz, who has raced horses successfully since 1977, owns Musk Creek Farm. He has enjoyed Melbourne Cup success with Subzero and the Golden Slipper with Danzero and has horses with several leading trainers including Gai Waterhouse and Lee Freedman. David Kobritz tasted Gr.1 success as a breeder with Epsom Handicap winner Rock Kingdom. Musk Creek will offer an eight-strong draft at the Premier Sale (February 28-March 3) with a blend of stallion newcomers and proven sires. "We've got a nice selection of first season sires, and the two by Hard Spun are lovely types," Dee said. The first of the stud's yearlings into the ring is Lot 142, a Hard Spun colt from the Red Ransom mare Much Better. The dam is sister to the Group performer Sweet Ransom, and their stakeswinning dam Rubitoff (Rubiton) is a sister to the Newmarket Handicap-Gr.1 and Salinger Stakes-Gr.1 winner Rubitano. "He's a very strong individual and looks an early runner," Dee said. The second offering by Hard Spun, a Gr.1-winning Danzig stallion and runner-up in the Kentucky Derby-Gr.1, is out of the multiple winner and black type placegetter Courtney's Cuddles (Brief Truce) whose only foal to race, Blooded, has won twice. "He's a lovely, big horse with plenty of scope." The son of Golden Jubilee Stakes winner Soldier's Tale (Lot 556) is out of the Viking Ruler mare Fjall, a half-sister to the Gr.2 winner La Sizeranne from the family of the great Lonhro, while the Holy Roman Emperor colt (Lot 592) is out of Meillure, an Encosta De Lago mare whose half-brother Atlantic Waves is an English stakes winner. "He's grown into a really lovely horse," Dee said of this youngster. The filly by the internationally performed sprinter Magnus is also out of Fashion Gala, a mare by the champion sire Encosta De Lago and from Maribyrnong Trial-LR winner Fashion Victim (Rory's Jester). "She's got an outstanding walk and has a lot of scope about her." Another exciting first season sire represented in the line up is the former champion European miler Excellent Art. His daughter is out of the stakes performed Rubiton mare Amen Ruby, herself a daughter of Gr.2 winner Golden Prayer. "She's a lovely, big filly who has filled out really nicely and is very athletic." Daughters of two proven stallions, Testa Rossa and Shamardal, complete the draft. "The Testa Rossa is a real pocket rocket and very neat and correct." She is out of the winning Encosta De Lago mare Betterthanblushing, whose half-brother Obadele won the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes and performed at Gr.3 level. "Shamardal is always popular and our filly is a big, strong individual and a great walker with plenty of scope." She is out of the American bred mare Timeless Art (Magisterial), who boasts a perfect record at stud with all four of her foals to race having won and including Australian Derby-Gr.1 fourth Boyd. "We're really happy with the horses as they have been specifically selected for the Melbourne market," Dee said.
