Bluebloods : Feb 2011 Issue - Sale Previews
February 2011 20 THE first of the Lindsay Park Stud bred crop of Good Journey to be sold at auction will highlight the famed South Australian farm's draft to the Melbourne Premier Sale. The Gr.1-winning son of Nureyev hails from the family of 1982 US Broodmare of the Year Best in Show (as does Redoute's Choice) and has already made his mark at the top level from a handful of runners and will have future numbers on his side to realise his full stallion potential. "From our perspective it's quite exciting and he served 119 mares in his first season with us," Lindsay Park principal Sam Hayes said. "We've got two in the draft to Melbourne and they are great examples of the quality Good Journey is putting into his yearlings." From 2003 to 2006, Good Journey stood privately in Victoria and sired Gr.1 winner Grand Journey (WATC Derby) and Gr.2 winner Sound Journey (Alistair Clark Stakes) from an initial crop of just 23 foals. The first offering of Lindsay Park's resident stallion is a colt out of the Last Tycoon mare Misty Lane, who is a half-sister to the Salinger Stakes-Gr.1 winner Notoire. The colt's second dam is wonderful producer Lady Violet, dam of 11 winners (3SW). "He's a terrific type with a nice, loose action and a lovely head and plenty of scope about him," Sam said. The Good Journey filly is a daughter of the winning Redoute's Choice mare Balsamico and is a half-sister to the promising Lee Freedman-trained juvenile Masthead. "We sold him last year, and this filly is also well balanced and athletic with a pretty head. She looks like a really precocious type." The Gr.1 winner and emerging young sire Red Dazzler will be represented in the consignment by a filly out of the champion South African sprinter Almah (Al Mufti) and the yearling has a 3mx3m cross of classic winner Roberto. "She's got a big shoulder and girth and we sold her half-sister by Singspiel last year for $140,000, and this is a more precocious type." The Danehill Dancer-New Gold Dream (Alzao) colt is a half-brother to seven winners, including Golden Pedigree, who has a black type success to her credit in the Queen Adelaide Stakes. "He's obviously out of a proven mare and I'm sure he's going to sell very well." A son of Zabeel's Australian Guineas-Gr.1 winner Reset is out of the dual stakes winner Prancelot. The Jeune mare has the perfect record at stud with both her foals to race having won. "He's an athletic, well balanced individual with a great attitude." Lindsay Park's Melbourne draft of six yearlings is completed by a Lonhro filly. She is out of the winning Bellotto mare Reef, who was also a stakes placegetter in Adelaide. The second dam produced six winners from as many foals to race and this is also the family of Ivano, who was a triple Gr.3 winner in England. Lindsay Park Stud was established in 1965 by Hayes' legendary grandfather Colin who proceeded to develop a world class stud and training complex in an ideal thoroughbred environment. Colin Hayes was one of the all time greats of the Australian turf with more than 5000 wins as a trainer, including 524 at stakes level. He also had a passion for thoroughbred breeding that left a lasting mark on the industry, standing the likes of Without Fear, Arch Sculptor, Godswalk, At Talaq, Bluebird, Military Plume, Scenic and Jeune at the Angaston property. With his close friend Robert Sangster, he was also one of the first to shuttle stallions to Australia. Four decades later and Sam Hayes is now at the helm of Lindsay Park Stud, which is home to resident stallions Good Journey, Reaan, Barely a Moment, Shrewd Rhythm, Face Value, De Beers, Captain Gerrard, Real Jester and Super Kid.
