Bluebloods : Feb 2011 Issue - Sale Previews
February 2011 19 KIA ORA Stud has targeted the Melbourne Premier Sale with the bulk of its yearlings this year and will present a draft by renowned sources of speed and proven producers of classic types, to cover all the racing bases. An excellent cross-section of stallions is represented in the consignment with Australasia's leading lights all in the mix. The successful Scone farm will present nine colts and six fillies at the auction and a potential star of the team is without doubt the stunning son of the Golden Slipper winner Stratum and the Zabeel mare Zalila (Lot 364). The dam is a sister to the Sandown Classic-Gr.2 winner Legible, who has produced two winners including the Warwick Stakes-Gr.2 winner and multiple Gr.1 placegetter Trusting. Expectations are also high for the next lot into the ring (365), the half-brother by Holy Roman Emperor to the Kia Ora and Melbourne Premier graduate Igugu (ex Zarinia by Intikhab), a multiple winner up to Gr.3 level in South Africa and Gr.1 placed in the Cape Fillies Guineas. The second winning dam, by Darshaan, is a sister to the Newmarket Greenham Stakes-Gr.3 winner Zayzani, with the showstopper in this pedigree the 2008 Arc de Triomphe winner and European Horse of the Year Zarkava, and of course this is the family tracing to Mumtaz Mahal. Colts from prolific European families are another notable feature of the draft, and the son of More Than Ready and the Danehill mare Danoise is a prime example. This colt's dam is a half-sister to the Irish Oaks winner Moonstone and the French Gr.1 winner Cerulean Sky, dam of the Ireland's 2007 champion stayer Honolulu. The colt by successful European sire Dansili is bred along classic lines, with his winning imported dam Wood Lane by the legendary Sadler's Wells (the proven Danehill-Sadler's Wells cross). The Gr.1-winning second dam Infamy (Shirley Heights) has produced 11 winners, with American Gr.3 winner Innuendo and French Gr.2 winner Moon Queen among her brood. Hot North American Bernardini has a colt out of the winning Danehill mare Danapali in the line up. A Tale of the Cat colt is out of Ripping Nic, an Encosta De Lago mare. Among the fillies is a daughter of the Oakleigh Plate- Gr.1 winner Snitzel out of the Rainbow Quest mare Spring Bubble, who boasts a perfect record at stud with both her foals to race having won. The second dam Capo Di Monte was an international Gr.3 winner and has produced four winners, including the American Gr.3 winner Magic Mission. She is also a half-sister to the German Gr.1 winner Wind In Her Hair, dam of the champion Japanese performer and Horse of the Year Deep Impact. The female European theme further continues with a daughter of Fastnet Rock from the Linamix mare Diamantina, a sister to the international Group winners Diamond Mix and Diaslixa. The daughter of Strategic is from the American-bred duel hemisphere winning Blue Grouse. By Maria's Mon and a winner of four races in England and Australia, she is a three-quarter sister to the French stakes winner Moquette. The fertile and picturesque Kia Ora is steeped in thoroughbred tradition and has produced six Melbourne Cup winners, 15 Derby Winners and five Cox Plate winners. In more recent times the champion Australian sprinter and leading sire Exceed And Excel has been one of its most decorated sons.
