Bluebloods : Feb 2011 Issue - Sale Previews
February 2011 16 BELL RIVER Thoroughbreds might be relatively new players to the breeding and racing game but the stud has made a flying start with a number of graduates of the Wellington-based operation already playing starring roles. The stud's owners have been quick out of the blocks to realise their ambition of producing metropolitan class performers reared in idyllic surroundings. "We've only been going five or six years and we've sold city winners Take This Waltz, My Cookie Monster and Module as well as No Respite and Seven Wonders who are city placegetters," Andrew Ferguson said. "We've got 809ha (2000 acres) here and run the horses on 100ha (250 acres) in 4-6ha (10-15 acre) paddocks on river flats surrounded by limestone hills. It's a beautiful part of the world." Bell River has built up a broodmare band of 25 and the stud's eight yearlings bound for the Melbourne Premier (February 28-March 3) are all homebred. "We had four of them accepted for the Easter Sale but we decided to pull them out and sell here and they are absolute stand outs," Andrew said. "It's an outstanding team and the best we've ever taken anywhere, so we're really excited about the sale." Included in the consignment is a son of the international Gr.1 winner and exciting first season sire Haradasun. "He's a big, strong and powerful colt out of a winning Flying Spur mare." The dam Royal Emerger is a half-sister to the Adelaide Cup-Gr.1 winner Demerger and the black type performer Trader from the family of the multiple Gr.1 winner Triscay, who has in turn produced the Galaxy Handicap winner La Baraka. "We've got two really nice Not A Single Doubt colts and one of them is out of Annie's River who is a winning sister by Canny Lad to the South African Gr.2 winner Sharks Bay." The pedigree page also features the QTC Cup-Gr.2 winner Pembleton and the Hollindale Cup-Gr.2 winner Fulmonti. "The other one (ex Try Again by Peintre Celebre) is out of a winning half-sister to Allez France and they are both terrific types and very correct." Andrew has been an admirer and strong supporter of the Redoute's Choice stallion Not A Single Doubt. "We've got 14 of them to sell in the next few years and I backed him early on and it looks a pretty good move now the way they have performed." He also has high expectations for the Reset colt out of the multiple winner Fleecing (Anabaa) who is bred on the proven Gr.1 Zabeel-Anabaa cross. "He is just a real stunner and a beautiful type who is very correct." Completing Bell River's colts is a son of Elvstroem from the Success Express mare Loose Caboose. The dam is a half-sister to the stakeswinning sprinter Any Suggestion, who was also Gr.1 placed, and the family of the former Gr.1 winner and sire Show A Heart. "Among the fillies is a daughter of Excites, a young sire with first crop winners already, and she's the only one by him in the sale, so that says everything about her quality." She is out of the winning Encosta De Lago mare Luminary, whose sister Examination won the Listed Creswick Stakes and the second dam is a sister to the AJC Oaks-Gr.1 and Australia Stakes-Gr.1 winner Alcove. The draft is completed by two daughters of Zabeel's Australian Guineas winner Reset. The first to be offered is a sister to the multiple winner Module, with their dam the AJC Breeders' Classic-LR winner Miss Helterskelter (Brocco), while the second is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Poetic Genius who was also Gr.2 placed. The second dam Sprinkler (Danehill), is a sister to the Golden Slipper winner and successful sire Catbird.
