Bluebloods : Feb 2011 Issue - Sale Previews
WHAT began as a hobby for Debbie Thompson and husband Allan Howard several years ago has now become a serious business, and the couple will offer 13 yearlings at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale on February 22 under their Brooklyn Park banner - six of their own and seven for clients. Allan and Debbie purchased their 56ha (140 acre) Evandale property three years ago and run a highly regarded spelling and agistment operation with the full time assistance of manager and experienced horsemen Matt Patterson. There is first class stabling for the yearlings and secure day yards too, "I don't like to have yearlings boxed all the time, I think they are much happier outside," said Debbie. Debbie and Allan breed about eight foals a year and are gradually upgrading their broodmare band. Their six home-breds are led by a Helike filly who is sure to command plenty of attention as she is a half-sister to the Tasmanian Guineas-LR winner Lyell (Tough Speed), a winner of six races from 800m- 1600m and $180,000 and one of the most popular horses in the state because of his courage and soundness. From the winning Keltrice mare Ladykin and from the family of SW Carlyle Ben and Symphony Miss, Debbie described this filly as "strong, well developed and very correct". Her young sire's oldest are two and he has had two runners for two placegetters. Brooklyn Park's Shinzig colt is bred to be precocious as his sire, whose oldest are yearlings, is a Gr.1-wining son of Danehill and his dam is a daughter of Nureyev's brilliant son Stravinsky and a sister to the stakes placed Melody, whose two year-old daughter Motifs has already won twice in Adelaide this season. Brooklyn Park like and support this pedigree and the colt is the first foal of his dam and hails from the same family as Tristanagh. The Clangalang-Florian (Aliocha) colt, "a big, scopey fellow from a good Tasmanian family", is the third foal of a city-winning mare (three wins 1400m- 1600m), whose first foal Destiny's Girl is a recent winner. His dam is a half-sister to stakes placed With Decorum (11 wins), while second dam Royal Egypt won 12 races and her stakes placed dam Egyptian Dancer won 11, and her eight winners include Tasmanian Guineas-LR winner Dance of Egypt. Brooklyn Park's Beautiful Crown colt from Celebrity Times (Cape Cross), a yearling with "good bone and size", carries a 3mx4m cross of Danzig and is from the family of Gr.1 winner King Phoenix. His second dam Alfred's Jewel won five races and was fourth in the VRC Matriarch Stakes-LR, and her four winners include stakes placed Superturf and King Kulani. Debbie described the Danbird-Mocca (El Moxie) yearling as "a correct upstanding filly with scope" and the youngster's dam won six races to 1400m and was fourth in the Tasmanian St Leger-LR. Second dam Otago Rose won five races and was runner-up in the Tasmanian 1000 Guineas-LR and her four winners include Springfield Rose (12 wins), while a daughter produced Hobart Guineas-LR winner Us and Maka. This filly's pedigree contains interesting inbreeding to Northern Dancer and his half-sisters Spring Adieu and Raise the Standard and she carries their dam Natalma 5m,5fx4f,5m. Brooklyn Park's seven yearlings for clients include a second crop colt by AJC Sires' Produce-Gr.1 winner Excites (Danewin) from To The Manner Born (Zeditave), who is from the family of Caulfield Cup winner Mannerism (dam of Dandify and Manner Hill, by Danehill). "He's a lovely colt, well grown with a great work ethic," Debbie said. There is also a "strong juvenile type" Benicio- Quadrunner (Zeditave) colt who is already attracting early enquiries as his dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr.1 winners Assertive Lad and Assertive Lass (dam of Reset) and his dam's first two foals are winners, and a Zeditave-Whizz Bang Lady (Semipalatinsk) colt described as "a ready to run youngster" and whose dam has already produced the multiple winners Queen of Asia and A Touch of Frost. His immediate family includes Gr.1 winner Sword and Gr.2 winner Belong to Many. The Niello-Tipsy Tapper (Citidancer) colt, a bold muscly type, and is from a sister to Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 placed Silky Dancer, while a pair of second crop well grown California Dane fillies (Lots 3 and 15) are from Nevertrice (Never Quit), a winner of six races and dam of multiple winner Omega Quest, and the first foal of Pirate's Sirene (Portland Pirate), a winner twice at 1200m and closely related to dual Gr.1 winner Casual Pass. The draft is rounded out by a Danbird (Danehill) colt, who carries a double cross (3fx4m) of Golden Slipper winner and successful sire Marscay. His dam She Gave It to Him (Delgado) is another from the family of Mackinnon Stakes-Gr.1 and Yalumba Stakes-Gr.1 winner Casual Pass.
