Bluebloods : Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Preview 2011
18 (General Nediym-Bella Maddelena by Flying Spur). The Magic Millions is their favourite hunting ground. Last year Heinrich Bloodstock secured 10 lots at the sale, spending on average just over $95,000 with a top priced lot of $220,000 for a Stratum filly and a gross spend of just under $1m. In 2009 they found Military Rose in the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft and $155,000 secured the brown filly. Her sire, General Nediym, looked a sound choice as a sire when chasing the Magic Millions dream. He scored in the 1997 renewal of the race with Queenslander Mick Dittman in the saddle for trainer Bill Mitchell and owner, the late Ron Ashdown. As a stallion, General Nediym had already left his mark on the race leaving Regimental Gal to win the Magic Millions Classic from his first crop in 2003. Sadly, General Nediym was lost to colic shortly after Military Rose was sold as a yearling in January 2009. His final yearlings go under the hammer in 2011, with 34 catalogued for sale at the Gold Coast. Also up for auction at the 2011 sale is a half-brother to Military Rose by boom first season sire prospect Haradasun. The colt will be offered by the Middlebrook Valley Lodge team and no doubt Team Heinrich will be inspecting the son of Bella Maddelena. The sharpest set of eyes in the Heinrich camp is vet Dr Tanya Geisel. A regular face at the sales, Tanya sifts through the catalogue in search of that next top line performer for the stable. Gillian pays full credit to Dr Geisel for securing Military Rose: "Tanya has been selecting our horses for years and years. She's everything rolled into one. She's in my stable every day, we're best friends. She even comes to gallops every Tuesday. Tanya does all the hard yards and walks for days and days, pulls out every horse in every sale." With much of the hard work done for Hoss and Gillian before they get to the sale, the abbreviation 'TSN' can be found marked in their catalogues. "We have a bit of a joke at the sales. TSN stands for 'Tanya Says No'." Heinrich has her sights set another Magic Millions Classic with Internal Revenue and Military Grace. "My next biggest aim is to win two in a row, which would be sensational." Internal Revenue is a son of Exceed and Excel, and was bred by Gillian and Hoss out of their Honour and Glory mare Group Certificate. He failed to reach his reserve of $80,000 at last year's sale from the Darlington Stud Draft. He returned home to join the Heinrich racing team. Military Grace was a $100,000 purchase by Heinrich Bloodstock last year out of the Baramul Stud draft. Like Military Rose, Military Grace is daughter of General Nediym. Should the Heinrich camp repeat last year's win, there will be a touch of sadness in memory of jockey Stathi Katsidis who died suddenly in October, as he was an essential part of the Military Rose victory: "That is the devastating part this year. It's really sad, it upset us both and Stathi will be really sorely missed on the day." MAGIC MILLIONS GOLD COAST 2011 YEARLING SALE PREVIEW ATHLETIC THOROUGHBREDS - GOLD COAST FUN
