Bluebloods : NZ Sires Preview August-September 2010
August/September 2010 29 RICHLY-bred stallion Sufficient will stand his first season at Highview Stud this year and is a son of Zabeel with a difference. He is one of only three male stakes-winning two-year-olds ever sired by the champion stallion and is in rare company alongside Australian superstar Octagonal and Hong Kong's champion performer Vengeance Of Rain. Sufficient was trained by Bruce Wallace and was narrowly beaten on debut at Ellerslie and was then sent straight into top company. He handled the sharp rise in class with aplomb for a highly-impressive victory in the Listed Champagne Stakes at the expense of subsequent Gr.1 winner Juice. Sufficient is out of the Centaine mare Fleur De Chine who was rated the third top two-year-old filly of her year. She won three races, including the Gr.2 Taranaki 2YO and the Listed Fairview Ford Stakes and finished second in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes. She also went on to place in the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes. At stud she has left the Gr.1 SAJC Australasian Oaks winner and Gr.1 South Australia Oaks runner-up Tully Thunder and the multiple winner and Gr.1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes placegetter Fleur De'here. It is further the Gr.1 family of Black Mamba (Del Mar John Mabee Handicap) and Roman Emperor (Australian Derby, 2nd Caulfield Cup) as well as Gr.2 Wellington Guineas winner Rios. "It is one of the hottest families in the New Zealand Stud Book and has the knack of coming up with one outstanding galloper after another," studmaster Brent Gillovic said. "There is not a flaw to be found in Sufficient's pedigree and it contains many of the stallion breed shapers of New Zealand -- Sir Tristram, Zabeel, Centaine, Sound Reason and Oncidium."
