Bluebloods : NZ Sires Preview July 2010
July 2010 38 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW WELLFIELD Lodge has secured one of Australia's top-ranked performers for stud duty at its blossoming operation on the outskirts of Palmerston North. The former Anthony Cummings-trained star is a dual Gr 1 winner and rated by many as unfortunate not to have a treble next to his name. "We believe he is the highest-rated and best-performed son of Encosta De Lago to go to stud to date," Bill Gleeson said. "He beat Black Piranha in the George Main Stakes last spring and was considered unlucky not to have beaten Rangirangdoo in the Doncaster Handicap." Rider Damien Oliver weighed in more than a kilo overweight after they had finished runners-up in the time-honoured Randwick metric mile feature. Road To Rock will stand at Wellfield alongside O'Reilly's son Alamosa, a Gr 1 winner on both sides of the Tasman, and Handsome Ransom, who had the distinction of beating Exceed And Excel in the Gr 3 Black Opal Stakes during his racing days. "I believe you've got to have horses who can win these major mile races in Australia to attract the Aussie buyers back to buy their progeny," Gleeson said. Road To Rock, a rising six-year-old, was the Gr 1 winner of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Sydney three runs back before he headed to the Queensland winter carnival. He finished second in the Gr 2 Hollindale Stakes and the curtain fell on his career after a game run for fourth in the Gr 1 Doomben Cup. He retired as the winner of six races and more than $A1.2 million. Wellfield's marketing manager Huw Taylor further highlighted Road To Road's credentials. "He will be one of only two horses standing in this country to have won two Gr 1 races in Australia and he's the highest-rated entire in Australasia announced as retiring to stud this year," he said. By the champion sire Encosta De Lago, Road To Rock is out of the Midyan mare Trewornan, who won as a two-year-old and has left three winners at stud. She is in turn a daughter of Miss Silca Key who won the Gr 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and has left no fewer than four black-type performers, including French Gr 3 winner Central City. Road To Rock has been syndicated into 50 shares with Wellfield Lodge retaining the majority holding. "We've had fantastic interest in shares in the horse," Gleeson said. The stallion, who stands 16.2 hands, will serve his first season at a fee of $12,500 + GST.
