Bluebloods : NZ Sires Preview July 2010
July 2010 36 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW THE first son of the internationally-successful sire Hussonet will be offered to New Zealand breeders this season with Rios' retirement to Waikato Stud, The Gr 1 performer also boasts an impressive female line with his dam Gussy Godiva the current New Zealand Broodmare of the Year. He combines his outstanding pedigree with striking good looks and a race record to match. The Chittick family purchased a major holding in Rios last year with a stallion career in mind and will stand him at their famed Matamata farm this season at a debut fee of $5000 + GST. The five-year-old was originally purchased at Karaka by Stuart Hale and the Cambridge-based bloodstock agent has retained an ownership interest in the stallion. "He's got an outstanding pedigree and showed he had the performance to go with it," Waikato Stud's Mark Chittick said. "He's a very good-looking horse with a wonderful temperament and was retired fully sound and we believe he'll prove great value for money." Rios's sire Hussonet is the most dominant active sire son of breed-shaper Mr Prospector in Australasia. A two-time winner and stakes placegetter from a handful of American starts, Hussonet began his stud career in Chile in 1995. He was champion sire there seven times, champion sire of two-year-olds five times and earned leading first-season sire honours. Hussonet commenced his stud career in Australia in 2004 having stood the previous year in the United States. He has left 27 individual Gr 1 winners world- wide, including Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler. Hussonet is out of the former champion American filly and triple Gr 1 winner Sacahuista, also the dam of Gr 1 producer Ekraar. Rios won six races from the Cambridge stable of Murray and Bjorn Baker and enjoyed a strong classic year. He was unbeaten in his first three starts at three with a Hastings victory preceding his Listed Bonecrusher Stakes success. Rios completed a notable hat-trick by defeating the subsequent trans-Tasman Gr 1 winner Alamosa at Trentham in the Gr 2 Wellington Guineas. He also finished third in the Gr 1 NZ 2000 Guineas and an autumn campaign in Sydney earned him a runner-up finish in the Gr 2 Tulloch Stakes. Rios trained on as an older horse to win a further three races that included the Listed Anzac Handicap at Awapuni. "He didn't always have luck on his side and needed good ground to show his best," Chittick said. "We bought into him as a potential stallion prospect and that plan will now come to fruition." Rios hails from an outstanding female family and is the first foal of the winning Last Tycoon mare Gussy Godiva. Her second foal is the Gr 1 Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor who has been followed by the promising Volgus. Adding an international flavour to the pedigree is Gussy Godiva's half-sister Black Mamba. She was a winner in New Zealand before finding fame and fortune in the United States where she has consistently met and matched the elite performers. Black Mamba is the Gr 1 winner of the John Mabee Handicap and two runnings of the Gr 2 Hollywood Beverley Hills Handicap. She is out of the Gr 3 Ladies' Mile winner and the family also boasts Gr 1 Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder.
