Bluebloods : NZ Sires Preview June 2010
June 2010 32 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW TOTARA Park Stud is a family run operation and its two stallions for the 2010 season also share a blood bond. The Whangarei farm is owned and managed by Les Donaldson with his daughter Nicci Oberholster and her husband Dirk. They currently stand Rusty Spur who will be joined for service this year by El Prado's son Buffalo Man. The latter is out of the four-time stakes winner Perfect Six, who is a half-sister by Saratoga Six to Rusty Spur. "That was a happy coincidence for us, but it was the El Prado factor that got us really excited," Nicci Oberholster said. A Gr. 1 National Stakes winner in Ireland during his racing days, the son of the legendary Sadler's Wells is proving to be a quality sire of sires. They include Medaglia D'Oro, sire of USA Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, as well as Kitten's Joy and Borrego. "Buffalo Man is a lovely, big type and most importantly he was a very fast horse. You have to have speed in a stallion and, after looking for a long time, we were lucky to get him," Oberholster said. "We purchased him through an American agent Gerald Becker, who got us Rusty Spur and we have built up a good rapport and trust with him." Buffalo Man won his first two juvenile starts before finishing third in the Gr. 3 Monmouth Sapling Stakes. He trained on to post a further six victories from 1000 to 1700 metres, including Gr. 3 successes in the Red Bank Stakes and Appleton Handicap. He was trained by Cam Gambolati, who prepared Spend A Buck to win the 1985 Kentucky Derby. Totara Park have also concentrated on upgrading their resident broodmares to ensure the newcomer receives every opportunity. "We have built up a nice band of broodmares by sires including the likes of Sir Tristram, Defensive Play, Snippets, Danehill Dancer and Last Tycoon. We owed it to ourselves and the mares to look for a new stallion and we'll put our best 25 or 30 mares to Buffalo Man this season," Oberholster said. Buffalo Man will stand at the introductory fee of $NZ6500 + GST while Rusty Spur will be offered at $NZ4000 + GST. A son of American Gr. 1 winner and producer West By West, Rusty Spur was the stakes winner of nine races in the United States. "He's done really well from limited opportunities - a good bread and butter sire who's ideal for people who breed to race," Oberholster sad. Rusty Spur's flagship performer has been first-crop product Silky Spur, a dual stakes placegetter as a juvenile while Totara has been a multiple Singapore winner. Totara Park was founded by Les Donaldson in the late 1960s and was home to former leading New Zealand stallion Bandmaster. His outstanding son and crack three-year-old Uncle Remus was born and bred on the farm. Gr. 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Sousa, Little Recruit (dam of dual Gr. 1 winner and sire Clangalang) and the top multiple winners Coruba and Regal Band are other prominent graduates.
