THE Chittick family's Waikato Stud at Matamata is one of Australasia's premier breeding operations, and its draft of 19 for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale reflects the quality of its stallion roster and exceptional broodmare band. Founded by Garry Chittick and encompassing 526ha (1300 acres) of prime horse country, the stud's stallion roster is headed by champion sire O'Reilly and young gun Pins, and notables among the hundreds of stakes winners bred at the stud include Starcraft, Dulcify, O'Reilly, Courtza, Vision and Power, Daffodil, Alamosa, River Rough and Imposera. The first of the Waikato yearlings into the ring is Lot 23, a bay colt by Pins from Lolly Scramble by Generous. His dam, a winner at 1200m at two, is a half-sister to Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Viennetta (Pins) and to Gr.3 winner Butterscotch (10 wins) and they are among the five winners from Bali Sugar, a winner and Gr.3 runner- up by Christmas Tree and from Gr.3 winner Tasman Dancer by New Regent. Lot 28 is another bay colt by the Australian Guineas- Gr.1 winner Pins (Snippets-No Finer by Kaoru Star), whose 30 stakes winners include Cox Plate hero El Segundo. This colt's dam is the winning O'Reilly mare Lucida, who has already produced the winner Bejewelled to Pins. Second dam Starcent won five races including the Hawkes Bay Gold Trail Stakes-Gr.3 and was runner- up in the NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 and Bayer Classic-Gr.1. A daughter of Centaine, her nine foals to race are all winners and include black type earners Ambitious and Patrick. Third dam Star of the Knight is a QTC Sires' Produce-Gr.2 winner by Sir Tristram. Lot 82 is a bay colt from the first crop of Gr.3 winner and AJC The Galaxy-Gr.1 runner-up Fast 'n' Famous (Redoute's Choice) and from the winning Centaine mare O'Really, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Courtza. O'Really's four foals to race are winners and include the talented Keano (Pins), whose five wins include the QTC Lightning Handicap-Gr.1. As well as being the Champion Australasian Two Year Old of 1988-89, Courtza, who won the Slipper and Blue Diamond at Gr.1 level, is also the dam of NZ Champion Three Year Old of 1997, Champion Sprinter-Miler and NZ Horse of the Year O'Reilly (Last Tycoon), a multiple Gr.1 winner and now champion sire in NZ and Hong Kong. This colt's third dam Hunza was another outstanding juvenile and her eight winners also include dual Gr.1 winner Our Pompeii, Lost Valley and Fixed Flush. Lot 128, a bay colt by O'Reilly from the stakes placed winner River Century (Centaine), is a brother to WATC Derby-Gr.1 winner Gunyo (six wins and $892,725) and a half-brother to outstanding three year-old filly Legs (Pins), a dual Gr.1 winner of the Kelt Capital Stakes and New Zealand Oaks (five wins $790,847). This colt's dam is a sister to the Villiers Stakes-Gr.2 winner Arletty and Gr.3 winner Firetain and a three-quarter sister to Arrowfield Stud Stakes-Gr.1 winner Sixty Seconds and Gr.3 winner Spottswoode. Lot 175, a bay filly by Pins from Sorgente (O'Reilly), is the second foal of a sister to Spring, dam of 2009 NZ Champion Three Year Old Daffodil, whose seven wins ($854,203) include the NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1, Australasian Oaks-Gr.1 and Hawkes Bay Windsor Park Challenge-Gr.1. This filly's dam is also a half-sister to star juvenile Good Faith (Ellerslie Sires' Produce-Gr.1) and they are daughters of the superbly bred imported mare Head of the River (Shirley Heights-Boathouse by Habitat). This is the family of Yawl, Buoy, Anchor, Fluke, Dry Dock and Mail the Desert. Lot 184 is a bay filly by Fast 'n' Famous from the Gr.3 winner and dual Gr.1 runner-up Starcent (Centaine) (same family as Lot 28) and carries a 4mx3f cross of NZ supersire Sir Tristram. This is the immediate family of Delta Girl, Hoystar, Sportsman and Prisoner of Love. Lot 285 is a bay or brown colt by the W.S. Cox Plate- Gr.1 winner Savabeel (Zabeel) and from the NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 runner-up Ambitious (Last Tycoon), a daughter of Starcent (Lot 184). Ambitious won two races and is already the dam of talented Royal Ambition (Royal Academy), a dual city winner and runner-up in the Foxton Castletown Stakes-LR. Lot 298 is a bay colt by Fast 'n' Famous from Aulioni by Bianconi and carries a 4mx3m cross of Danzig. His dam is a half-sister to SAJC Australasian Oak-Gr.1 winner Marju Snip and Hong Kong Derby Trial-HKGr.2 winner Unique Jewellery, their winning dam Aulide (Snippets) being a half-sister to Hong Kong champion Billion Win (11 wins and $2.9m) and Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 winner Nadeem (Redoute's Choice), the latter being bred on similar lines to this yearling. Third dam It's Candide won the NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 and Oaks-Gr.1. Lot 320 is a bay colt by Savabeel from the Frances Tressady Stakes-Gr.2 winner Breezy (Pins). He is the second foal of Breezy (five wins and $190,051) and she is a daughter of (Our) Zephyr Magic (Zephyr Bay), a tough sprinter/miler whose 12 wins included the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes-Gr.2 and who was also runner-up in the AURC Newmarket-Gr.1. Her six winners included South African Group winners Dahlia's Legacy and Neo Star, while an unraced daughter Zeffi produced the Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Century Kid. This is the family of Taras Bulba and Taras Regent and of international champion and now boom young sire Starcraft. Lot 350, a bay filly by O'Reilly from Classique Royale by Royal Academy, is out of a half-sister to the Swettenham Stud Stakes-Gr.3 winner Apple Danish. Her dam has already produced multiple winner Stream Crosser (Viscount) and her second dam, Classic Style, an imported daughter of champion sprinter Thatching and Danseuse Classique (Northern Dancer) produced nine winners and is a half-sister to European stakes winner Regal Parade. Lot 363, a bay filly by O'Reilly from Critic by Centaine. This filly's dam won nine races from 880m-1600m including the Otaki Maori WFA Stakes-Gr.1, while her second dam Benazir (Vice Regal) is a winning sister to Courtza (dam of O'Reilly), Our Pompeii, Fixed Flush, Lost Valley and Hunza Court. This yearling carries a 3fx3f cross to leading two year-old filly Hunza (Pakistan). Lot 373 is a grey colt by Pins from stakes placed Danex (Danasinga). His dam won over 2000m and was placed in the Sir Tristram Fillies' Classic-Gr.2 and her first foal to race Danahere (Dehere) is a winner this season. Second dam Balm (Shy Rambler) won three races and produced six winners and is a half-sister to dual Gr.1 winner Calm Harbour. Lot 407 is a bay colt by Pins and from the Gr.3 placed Escada (Centaine). The 10th foal for his dam, he is a half-brother to multiple Gr.1 winners Vision and Power (10 wins, $2.01m) and Glamour Puss (nine wins and $1.24m) and his young sister Pretty is a winner this season. Escada has also produced the Gr.2 winner Rare Insight and Listed winner Escadaire and this is the family of Starman II and Arenti, both outstanding performers in Singapore and Malaysia. Lot 409 is a bay colt by Pins from the Marton Cup-LR winner Etoile du Nord by Zabeel. His dam won five races from 1600m-2400m and is a daughter of the imported You Remember (Topsider). This is the family of Gr.1 performer Artie Schiller and the colt's fourth dam Tallahto was a Gr.1 winner in the US and is an influential broodmare. Lot 410 is a brown colt by Savabeel from the winning Centaine mare Ever Clever. This colt's dam has produced five winners including the NZ St Leger-LR winner Ritzy Lady, a three-quarter sister to this colt. Ever Clever, a daughter of the imported Thum's Lil Sister (Clever Trick), is a half-sister to six winners including South African Group winner and producer Hancock Park and Listed winners Playful Fingers and Clever Zoe. Lot 421 is a bay colt by Pins from stakes placed Fiaba by Defensive Play. He is the second living foal of a half-sister to Arenti (Champion Older Sprinter in Singapore/Malaysia), the Gr.3 winner Crepe de Chine (Pins) and Listed winner Grand Slam (Pins) and from the family of Vision and Power and Glamour Puss (Lot 407). Lot 477, a bay colt by Pins from Hyades by O'Reilly, is a brother to talented filly Tootsie, whose six wins (1200m-1400m) include the Waikato RC Sprint-LR, while second dam Habania (Habat) won seven races up to 1200m and was Gr.3 placed before producing 10 winners including the stakes winners La Rose Noir (dam of Espurante) and Urbane. Lot 485 is a bay colt by Savabeel from Hong Kong winner Jacquin by Bluebird and carries a 4mx4f cross of Sir Ivor. His dam has produced four wins including dual Gr.1 winner Metal Bender (Rosehill Guineas, Randwick Guineas) and stakes placed Southern Venture (Zabeel), while second dam Nuwirah (by Pleasant Colony from stakes winner and Gr.1 runner up Secretarial Queen by Secretariat) is the dam of Gr.1 winner and sire Keeper (Danehill) among six winners.
