Bluebloods : April 2010
TOOLOOGANVALE Farm at Scone has gone from strength to strength since kicking with an Easter draft of just one horse some five years ago, selling several six figure yearlings last year and offering its biggest draft yet in 2010. "They are a really nice group of yearlings," said the stud's Geoff Harris who, along with his wife Jann, oversees the 242ha (600 acres) just 10 minutes outside of Scone. Describing Toolooganvale as a "family operation," Harris and his staff are kept busy with some 50 permanent residents and around 150 mares going through the farm each year. "We have our own truck and we walk-in to all the big studs," he said. Eight well related yearlings make up the stud's Easter draft and the first through the ring is Lot 22, a bay colt by Anabaa ex Lolita Star (by Jeune). He is by one of Danzig's most successful shuttling sons and out of a high class race mare who won three races including the Wakeful Stakes- Gr.2. A half-sister to the Gr.3 galloper Berezny, Lolita Star hails from the prolific black type family of Just Now, Bernalla, Startell, Telltina, Scenic Warrior, Stanzaic, Shiva's Revenge and McClintock. "He is a nice type and he has got a good walk on him," Toolooganvale's manager Brook Clifford said. Lot 253, a chestnut colt by Dehere ex Wild Orchid (by Giant's Causeway), is by an outstanding sire of 62 stakes winners. This colt is a half-brother to the promising two year-old De Lago Bloom, a last start Eagle Farm winner. Dam is an imported half-sister to the York Listed winner Gold Academy, and her grandam is the Italian Oaks-Gr.1 heroine Paris Royal. Grand stayer Oscar Schindler hails from this family, as does the Irish 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner Northern Treasure. "He is a lovely big, strong horse." Lot 325, a grey colt by Elusive Quality ex Calais Royale (by Captain's Gold), is by high class stallion out of a city- winning mare who has produced a Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner in the shape of Calaway Gal, and that mare's daughter is the next horse through the ring. "Definitely a two year-old type like his sister and, like her, he is not tall but really strong and muscular." Lot 326, a chestnut filly by Encosta de Lago ex Calaway Gal (by Clang), is bred on a 4fx4m cross of Mr. Prospector. This daughter of a champion stallion and a high class two year-old who won the Golden Slipper is a half-sister to the city winner Premium and a sister to the lightly raced winner Atreyu. "She is an absolute stand-out, a lovely, big, athletic filly and the best Encosta de Lagos are those with a bit of size about them." Lot 357, a bay or brown colt by Exceed And Excel ex Cosmic Strike (by Made of Gold), is bred for pace and he's by a speed sire and out of a mare who won five races up to 1250m (including the Gilgai Stakes-Gr.3). He is a three- quarter brother to the metropolitan winners Cosmic Choice and Luce Del Mare. "He is an early type as his pedigree suggests, and is strong with really good bone." Lot 419, a bay or brown filly by Stravinsky ex Fashion Victim (by Rory's Jester), is by one of Nureyev's finest sons and out of a speedy Listed-winning juvenile whose half- sister Celestial Show won the Bunbury Cup-Gr.3 and two Listed races. Third dam is the Gr.2 mare Adraanito, dam of the dual Group winner Spargo. "Quite a big girl, strong and forward." Lot 463, a chestnut colt by Rock of Gibraltar ex Hanover (by Marscay), is by a champion son of Danehill and is a three-quarter brother to the stakes placed Éclair Fastpass, out of a wining half-sister to the current star of the Australian turf Typhoon Tracy. Grandam Tracy's Element, a four times Gr.1 winner in South Africa, is also dam of the dual Listed winner Red Element and grandam of the Gr.2 winner Shaft. "He is very well put together. He has lovely length of rein, is good in front and a lovely mover." Lot 481 is a bay colt by Snitzel ex Imposed (by Rory's Jester). His sire has made a great start at stud and this fellow is a half-brother to the two year-old city winner African Lion and out of a winning sister to the speedy triple Listed winner Miss Prospect (dam of last year's Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward For Effort and the tough multiple stakes winner Consular) and half-sister to the Gr.3 galloper Life's A Bounty. "We sold a Snitzel at Melbourne Premier for $170,000 and, like him, this colt is really big and strong and well proportioned with it, definitely an early type."
