Bluebloods : April 2010
SUCCESSFUL vendors at last year's Easter Sale, Peter and Colleen Boyle have more than 30 years combined experience in the thoroughbred industry, having worked at some of the Hunter Valley's best-known farms. They established Sefton Park Stud at Scone in 2004. For the first few years the couple sold a handful of horses with Segenhoe, and then Sefton Park sold under its own Easter banner for the first time last year, achieving an average above $100,000. "If we can do the same this year we will be very happy," Peter said, pleased to be taking a larger draft of 11 to Sydney. The quality of those mares is evident in the strength of the draft. Lot 40 is a bay colt by Al Maher ex Marzipan (by Gold Brose). His sire's oldest are three and have been shaping extremely well. Bred on the highly successful Danehill/Biscay cross, this colt is a half-brother to the lightly raced dual winner Glaze and out of a metropolitan- winning, half-sister to the Group winners Viennetta and Butterscotch. Lot 71, a bay colt by Commands ex Navaja (by Daggers Drawn), is by one of Danehill's best sire sons who is a member of the Eight Carat clan. He is the second foal of a four times winning mare who was Gr.3 placed in the US. Lot 92, a bay colt by Fastnet Rock ex Pennatus (by Charnwood Forest), is by one of Australia's most popular young stallions. He is a three-quarter brother to the city winner Mercia, out of a half-sister to the stakes winners Northeast Sheila (dam of the tough Listed winner Jacqueline Rouge), Kablammo and Dashing Granada (dam of the stakes placed Albaicin). Grandam Jovan is a city-winning, half-sister to the stakes winners Gold City and Sioux Chief. Lot 243, a bay colt by Rock of Gibraltar ex Viennetta (by Pins), is bred on the excellent Danehill/Snippets cross. He is the second foal of a Gr.2-winning half-sister to the Gr.3 winner Butterscotch - also the family of Lot 40. Carries four strains of Northern Dancer and a 6fx7m cross of the wonderful mare Grey Flight. Lot 301, a bay colt by Pins ex Bali Sugar (by Christmas Tree), is bred on a 4mx4m cross of Star Kingdom, he too is from the Viennetta family. Lot 335, a chestnut colt by Hussonet ex Captain's Command (by Volksraad), is a half-brother to this season's Gr.3-winning two year-old Sweet Cheeks. Grandam is a winning daughter of the Gr.3 mare Grand Jette and this fellow is bred on a 6mx7m cross of the terrific mare Pocahontas. Lot 457, a grey colt by More Than Ready ex Gray Gladiolus (by Inciderator), is by a high class, versatile proven stallion out of an imported mare whose first two to race are both winners. Grandam is the Gr.3 mare Gladiolus, winner of 17 races and dam of the Gr.1 winner Swamp King, the Gr.3 winner Stylish Senor and the Listed winner Dramatis. Lot 503, a bay colt by Savabeel ex Trisha's Belle (by Sir Tristram), is bred on a 3mx2m cross of Sir Tristram. He is from the third crop of a Cox Plate- Gr.1 winner who is faring well at stud. This colt is a half- brother to the Listed-winning juvenile Mary Lavelle and the multiple city winners Sable and Trophy and out of a sister to the seven times Group winner Tri Belle. Third dam is the outstanding race and broodmare Star Belle. "He is typical of his family, very strong. He will need a little bit of time being from the Zabeel line." Lot 534 is a chestnut filly by Singspiel ex Dictatorial (by Thunder Gulch). Her sire didn't stand here for long but he left his mark with an exceptional strike rate. She is the first foal of an imported half-sister to the stakes winner Ilha Grande. Grandam is the stakes placed Miss Evans, daughter of the Gr.2 mare Targa. Boasts an interesting pedigree, with multiple strains of the prolific Almahmoud family via three crosses of Northern Dancer, one of Halo and another of that stallion's half-sister Queen Sucree. "She will need some time as the breed usually do, but you have to be impressed by her sire's strike rate." Lot 602, a bay filly by Excites ex Shower of Steel (by Comet Shine), is from the first crop of a well-related Gr.1- winning son of Danewin. She is a half-sister to the South African Gr.3 winner Polished Steel. Carrying three crosses of Northern Dancer, she is out of a very good mare who won eight races. "Ahhh, a lovely filly," Peter said, "very, very nice and very forward." Lot 603 is a chestnut colt by Fusaichi Pegasus ex Song of Songs (by Danehill). His sire boasts a good local strike rate and this fellow is a half-brother to the smart Hong Kong galloper My Melody and out of a lightly raced but well regarded half-sister to the champion Sunline.
