Bluebloods : April 2010
ON THE heels of a successful Karaka sale, Sam and Catriona Williams' Little Avondale Stud at Masterton, New Zealand, presents a strong draft of three well-related yearlings at Easter. The breeders of recent Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Special Days (the Centenary Vase at Shatin), Little Avondale sold some very nice yearlings at Karaka, and its proprietors are proud of the stud's top sellers, a $250,000 Darci Brahma-Rivertaine colt and a $250,000 Elusive City-Shahiid colt - both heading to the stables of Bart Cummings. Overall, the stud sold over $3m worth of horses, "a good week's work in anyone's language," Sam Williams said, "giving us as much satisfaction as the financial returns is the repeat business we get from so many respected yearling judges," he continued. "The likes of Bart Cummings, DGR Thoroughbreds, Peter Moody, Paul Moroney, Bruce Perry, Phil Cataldo and Alan Sharrock were all repeat customers. We also sold to Mark Pilkington, Rob McAnulty, Roger James, IDL Racing and Peter Jolly." Notable achievements in recent times by Little Avondale Stud graduates include those of Larry's Never Late (Pentire-Laebeel) who won the $300,000 Launceston Cup Gr. 3 in February, Roman Emperor (Montjeu-Gussy Godiva) who won the 2009 AJC Derby for Bart, going one better than fellow Little Avondale graduate Gorky Park (Montjeu-Steluta) who finished runner up for David Hayes in the Victoria Derby two seasons before, and the Patinack filly Marquardt (Shamardal-Centrefold Angel), who at her most recent start last Spring, won the Listed Snowhite Stakes at Sandown. On debut Marquardt had the honour of defeating none other than Manhattan Rain back in January of 2009, when embarking on a Slipper campaign, where she finished 6th, beaten only 4.5 lengths behind Phelan Ready, Headway, and Manhattan Rain following placed performances in the Listed Widden Stakes and Gr. 2 Magic Night. So there is much to look forward to at Easter and keen judges are bound to be impressed by the Little Avondale quartet. The draft begins with Lot 9, a brown colt by O'Reilly ex Laebeel (by Zabeel). He is by a champion sire and out of a Listed winning mare who went oh so close in a Caulfield Cup-Gr.1. Three of her first four foals are winners, including Larry's Never Late, the recent Launceston Cup-Gr.3 winner. Also a half-brother to the city winners Sesotho and Choicely, this yearling hails from an in-form family, one that has produced recent big race winners Monaco Consul and Nicconi. Its other high profile members include General Nediym, Horlicks, Brew, Military Plume and Interstellar - as well as this colt's Adelaide Cup-Gr.1-winning third dam Laelia. Carrying duplications of Northern Dancer and Round Table, he is also line-bred to the fine mares Netherton Maid and Knight's Daughter. Lot 176, a brown colt by Darci Brahma ex Southern Cry (by Kaapstad), is bred on a 4mx3m cross of Sir Tristram, as is rising NZ star Zarzuela. He is from the first crop of a five-time Gr.1 winner whose progeny sold very well at Karaka. Dam is a placed sister to the stakeswinning stayer Full Noise and half-sister to the Gr.2 winner Dancing Daze and the Listed winner General Booth. Grandam is a half-sister to NZ Filly of the Year Mun Lee and this is also the family of the SA Oaks-Gr.1 winner Marmalitre. Lot 346, a bay filly by Zabeel ex Chatto Creek (by Desert Prince), is by a champion sire and out of a half-sister to the extra smart Gr.1 placed Hong Kong galloper Regency Horse. A half-sister to last year's Singapore winner Excellent Beauty, this filly hails from the same family as the feature race winners Arletty, Firetaine, Legs, Guyno, Sixty Seconds, Fill The Bill, Star Worship and Spottswoode. A descendant of the great matriarch Teppo, she carries crosses of the influential stallions Northern Dancer and Sir Ivor. Her grandam Rivertaine is the dam of Little Avondale's $250,000 Karaka colt.
