Bluebloods : April 2010
April 2010 INGLIS AUSTRALIAN EASTER YEARLING SALE Proudly present their first Easter offering.... LOT 180 LONHRO -- SPIRE by DANEHILL A dark brown colt by the leading young sire, LONHRO... From the stakes placed Danehill winner SPIRE (Danehill -- Turret (GB) by Shirley Heights). Bred on the successful Lonhro-Danehill/Zabeel-Danehill cross, this colt has real presence. Bell River T horoughbreds Wellington NSW To arrange an inspection or for more details contact: Andrew Ferguson at Bell River Thoroughbreds Phone: 02 6846 7270 • Mobile: 0428 649 475 Email: email@example.com THERE is no point going to Easter unless you have the right horse," said Andrew Ferguson of Bell River Thoroughbreds at Wellington, and he is very confident that he has just that horse - an eye-catching Lonhro colt who goes through the Newmarket ring on day one, Tuesday, April 6 as Lot 180. Nominating the colt for both the Melbourne and Sydney sales, Ferguson at first was not sure which way to go, but as the Lonhro breed started to shine he became convinced that Easter was the right choice: "Ian MacPherson (Inglis' senior bloodstock consultant) visited the farm and said 'this is an Easter horse' and they really worked on us to bring him to Sydney," he said. Having made the decision, Ferguson is justifiably excited and proud as the colt is his first Easter yearling and he is one of the few vendors with just the one horse - and a very nice one he is too. "He is a big, strong, scopey colt and he is very similar in type to Lonhro - a very dark brown and a great walker. The mare's first two winners were both successful at two and this colt looks like he is ready to go, he is very forward." Having a look of his sire is in this colt's favour as Lonhro is really stamping his progeny, with his best runners reminding everyone of their sire - and of his sire Octagonal in turn. Boasting an excellent early career strike rate in excess of 58% winners-to-runners, Lonhro is already the sire of 10 impressive stakes winners. His Gr.1 winner Denman has been in flying form this preparation while the likes of O'Lonhro, Deer Valley, Demerit, Black Minx, Trim, Minnesota Shark, Beaded, Custard and Secession all have superior ability. Interestingly, of those 10 stakes winners three are bred on the same Lonhro/Danehill cross as this fellow -Black Minx (dual Listed winner) and Deer Valley (Silver Shadow Stakes-Gr.3) out of Danehill mares and Minnesota Shark (Mitchell McKenzie Stakes-LR), whose dam is by Flying Spur. A Bobs eligible September foal, this colt is the fourth youngster produced by the stakes placed city winning mare Spire, a daughter of Danehill. She has made an excellent start to her stud career as her second foal Alright Already was a debut winner at Gosford, while her two year-old Under The Eiffel looked very good breaking his maiden at only his second start at Seymour in December. Spire is a daughter of the imported Shirley Heights mare Turret, dam of five winners and sister to the UK stakes winner Catwalk. Another of her sisters, Mood Swings, is dam of the Gr.3 winner Grand Ducal and grandam of last year's stakes winner Azmeel. This is also the family of the Gr.1 winners Peak of Perfection, Rolle, Emit Time, Capades, Marduk and Mata Hari. Ferguson is relatively new to the breeding scene, but has always had an interest in thoroughbreds. His wife Georgie is involved in showing - as are their children (James crowned Champion Junior Rider at Sydney Easter) and they are in the process of building up their stock. With around 20 mares currently on the farm, they have been upgrading and hope that this Easter foray is the first of many - "three of this year's foals are Easter quality," he said. A successful breeder of merino sheep, Ferguson decided to build up his capital by pin-hooking, and this colt caught his eye at last year's Inglis weanling sale and he could not be happier with his progress. BELL RIVER'S lone yearling is a striking Lonhro colt " Lonhro (Octagonal (NZ)-Shadea (NZ) by Straight Strike (USA)) 14
