Bluebloods : April 2010
THE exceptionally tough and classy Lucky Secret and the extra smart Royal Discretion, one a very good horse in Melbourne and the other a very good performer in Sydney, are graduates of Attunga Stud's Inglis Australian Easter Sale drafts, and this year the Scone-based nursery has its biggest draft yet - and what an impressive bunch the yearlings are with six colts and two fillies each by proven high class stallions! First through the ring is Lot 25, a bay colt by Commands ex Love And Emotion (by Woodman). His sire is one of the best young stallions by Danehill and has an excellent strike rate. This colt is the second foal of a lightly raced half-sister to the Toorak Handicap-Gr.1 winner Shot of Thunder and the Belmont Oaks-LR winner Celebrity Princess, dam of the stakes winner Lady Natasha. Grandam is the AJC Oaks-Gr.1 heroine My Brilliant Star. This is the family of the feature race winners Lachlan River (Queensland Derby-Gr.1) and Sudurka (Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1). "He is a very nice horse and I would not be surprised if he showed up at two, although he will benefit from a bit of extra time. He has plenty of size and scope," Attunga's Brian Nutt said of this descendant of the famed matriarch Teppo. Lot 135, a bay colt by Exceed And Excel ex Royal Babe (by Rory's Jester), is bred for pace as his sire and dam sire were outstanding sprinters. He is the second living foal of a New Zealand stakes winner. Grandam is the stakes placed Royal Snip, daughter of the triple Listed winner Snippets' Girl, also dam of the stakes winner Academy Dancer. This is the family of the stakes winners Cheval Place, Snippets' Show, Fully Fledged, Show Barry, Rouquin and Patpong. Carrying three crosses of Northern Dancer, he is also line-bred to the fine mares Natalma and Stepwisely. "He looks like an early type as his pedigree suggests as it's speed on speed," Nutt said. Lot 144, a bay colt by Starcraft ex Sassy Soda (by Flying Spur), is bred on the same Starcraft/Danehill cross as his sire's impressive Blue Diamond-Gr.1 winner Star Witness. He is out of a placed half-sister to the Gr.2 mare Camena (dam of the stakes placed Warhead) and the Listed winner Jai's Jump. Grandam is a winning daughter of the Gr.3 mare Soda Springs. Line-bred to Northern Dancer (three crosses) and his dam Natalma. "He could run at two, but he will be better at three. He has plenty of quality. Starcraft is doing a great job and Flying Spur has been doing very well as a broodmare sire of late." Lot 165, a chestnut colt by Dehere ex Silver Success (by Success Express), is by a proven sire of Gr.1 performers. He is a brother to last year's lightly raced city winner Endeavouring, out of a city-placed sister to the Gr.3 filly Patterns and three-quarter sister to the stakes placed Annbari. The family has produced the stakes winners Pride of Kellina and Candy Is Dandy and further back the legendary brothers Todman and Noholme. "There won't be too many more chances to buy a Dehere, and he is a lovely colt. He is a real racehorse, a dead-set runner, as was his brother who won in town at two." Lot 228, a bay colt by Danzero ex Ubiquity (by Hurricane Sky) is by one of the best of Danehill's stallion sons. He is a three-quarter brother to the speedy Listed-winning juvenile Horizons, out of a city placed sister to the Gr.3 sprinter Continuum. Grandam is a city-winning daughter of the Gr.3 mare Lemon Princess. Line-bred to Northern Dancer and Star Kingdom, he also boasts duplications of the excellent mares Natalma and Arietta. "He is a lovely colt, a two year-old type. Horizons was a very nice yearling and he is a bit more forward than her at the same time. He is very correct, a good walker, and he has a great attitude." Lot 279, is a bay or brown filly by Lonhro ex Agile (by Canny Lad). Her sire is enjoying a great run and this filly is a sister to the promising Malaysian galloper Good Judgement (winner of his past two from just three outings) out of a dual city-winning, half-sister to the Gr.1-winning two year-old Align. She is also a half-sister to the stakes placed Breathtaker and sister to the Gr.2 placed Superb Lady, dam of the Shorts Handicap-Gr.2 winner Fritz's Princess. Third dam is the Desert Gold Stakes-Gr.2 winner Eastern Bay. "She is the spitting image of her sire, especially in colour. She is a very nice walker and she has size and scope." Lot 294, a chestnut colt by Exceed And Excel ex Arising (by Marauding), is bred on the highly successful Danehill/Sir Tristram cross. He is out of a terrific broodmare who has produced five winners including the Gr.3 sprinter/miler Shanzero, the Listed-winning speedster What's The Mail and the stakes placed Emerging Star. Her two year-old Originate debuted with a handy fourth at Randwick in late February. City placed Arising is a half-sister to the Brisbane Cup-Gr.1 winner Danestorm. Third dam is the 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 heroine Copperama, grandam of the Gr.1 filly Danendri, in turn grandam of last spring's VRC Oaks-Gr.1 winner Faint Perfume. "Originate was very green at his first start but it was a promising run. Arising has been a wonderful broodmare, every winner has been successful at metropolitan level and I don't think this colt will be any different, he is a real stand-out." Lot 487 is a bay filly by General Nediym ex Jerusha (by Octagonal). Her sire is having a great season with his two year-olds and this filly is the first foal of a city winning half-sister to the South African dual Gr.1 winner Our Giant and the Singapore star Rocket Man, who recently resumed with a brilliant victory at Kranji. Grandam, the dual Listed winner Macrosa, is a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner Ebony Grosve (AJC Derby, Mackinnon Stakes). "She is very correct and a real get up and go-type. She has a good attitude and there is just nothing wrong with her, a typical General Nediym."
