Bluebloods : Inglis Sydney Classic
SITUATED in the heart of the Hunter Valley and run by David and Verna Metcalfe, Middlebrook Valley Lodge is proud of its reputation as first class carers of the thoroughbred, and the Metcalfe's philosophy that "every horse is treated as an individual" is paying dividends. The stud is set on 150ha (370 acres) of prime pastoral land - just right for growing young racehorses - and Middlebrook will present a quality draft of four yearlings at the Inglis Classic Sale. The first youngster into the ring will be Lot 360 on the sale's second day, January 25. She is a bay filly by high profile shuttler Holy Roman Emperor and from Uptown (by Success Express). This yearling, from the first local crop of one of Danehill's finest racing sons, is a half-sister to this season's metropolitan winner Uptown Lass and the four-times winner Uptown Tycoon. She hails from the family of the northern hemisphere stakes winners Summer Ridge, Flying Frippery and Herculated. Carrying three crosses of Northern Dancer and a 4mx5m cross of the influential matriarch Somethingroyal, she is a descendant of the great mare Plucky Liege. Lot 406 is a chestnut colt by Beautiful Crown from Alassany (by Zoffany). By one of Australia's most reliable stallions, he is a half-brother to Ourquestro and Ready On Sunday, both winners this season. His dam is the multiple city-winning mare Alassany, whose city-placed dam Alack Alass is a half sister to the dual Gr.2 winner Lacka Reason. Carrying three crosses of the legendary Bold Ruler, he is also bred on a 7mx7f cross of the fine mare Tedmelia. Lot 470 is a brown filly by the Baerami Thoroughbreds-based California Dane (who set the Moonee Valley 1200m track record of 1:09.67) and from Broccoli (by Brocco). From the first crop of a Gr.2-winning Danehill stallion, this lass is a half sister to Romanesco - a winner twice this season. Her dam is a winning half-sister to the Flight Stakes-Gr.1 heroine Royal Purler and this is the family of the tough stakes winners Princess Talaria (this filly's fourth dam), Silver Flyer, Mustard, Valuate, Magsaya and Deianira. Boasts three crosses of Northern Dancer. Lot 471 is a brown colt by Carnegie from Brokovich (by Romeo). Bred on the highly successful Northern Dancer/Star Kingdom cross, he is out of an unraced half-sister to the multiple city winner Concord from the family of the tough dual stakes winner Newton's Rings. His dam is a daughter of the stakes placed multiple city winner Wings On Her Heels, dam of the stakes placed juvenile Winged Hope.
