Bluebloods : Karaka 2010 Yearling Sale Preview
86 ick a month, any month, during 2009 and horses bred, reared and sold by the Chittick family's Waikato Stud -- Australasia's leading vendor of Group One winners in 2008-09 -- made the headlines. It's been a truly remarkable year: January -- Kildare (by O'Reilly from a Centaine mare) wins the HKJC Bauhinia Sprint Trophy HK-3. February -- O'Reilly gets his third Group One winner of 2008-09 when MacO'reilly wins the Waikato RC Whakanui Stud International Stakes, and another big winner in Hong Kong when Unique Jewellery takes out the Hong Kong Derby Trial HK-2. Miss Millbrook (No Excuse Needed) wins the Dunedin Guineas LR; Karaka Select graduate Betwixt (O'Reilly) becomes the first filly in more than 30 years to win the Tasmanian Derby Gr. 3. March -- My Emotion gives Savabeel a perfect start to his stud career by winning the VRC TBV Thoroughbred Breeders' S. Gr. 3, and Scaredee Cat gets his first winner, Cat Woman at Matamata. MacO'reilly adds the ARC New Zealand S. Gr. 1 to his record, and Metal Bender (from Danasinga's last New Zealand crop) claims a Group One double in the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas. April -- The poet who called it "the cruellest month" obviously didn't know the Chitticks. Vision and Power's STC George Ryder S. win, and Markus Maximus' Western Australian Derby victory take Waikato Stud's tally of home-bred Group One winners for the season to six. That surpasses the previous Australasian record for the decade of five, which the Chitticks held jointly with Woodlands Stud. For good measure, Vision and Power adds the AJC Doncaster H. Gr. 1, and Daffodil becomes the first filly to win both the NZ 1000 Guineas Gr. 1 and the AJC Oaks Gr. 1. Joey Massino (O'Reilly) and Warrentherooster (Savabeel) quinella the ARC Champagne S. LR, and Mark Chittick's filly Bird (Danasinga) seals the New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year title after winning the CJC Warstep S. LR. May -- Okay, even champion breeders take a breather occasionally! No black type this month, but O'Reilly gets a treble in Hong Kong, and Pins is represented by winning fillies Raid and Sharp Princess (both from O'Reilly mares), debut winner Aspinal and Attackum, who downs a big field of sprinters at Doomben. June -- Pins gets a black type double in Australia when Glam Slam picks up the VRC Creswick S. LR to enhance her future breeding value, and Keano wins the QTC Lightning S. LR. July -- Pins reaches a milestone when Pindy becomes his 30th stakeswinner in the Waikato Stud-sponsored Opunake Cup LR. Savabeel gets his first New Zealand stakeswinner, Queen Sabeel, in the Northland Breeders' S. LR. He's one of only two freshman sires in Australasia to leave two juvenile stakeswinners from his first crop. August -- Escadaire (O'Reilly- Escada) adds his measure of black type to a family already laden with it, when he wins the WATC Newmarket H. LR. He's a half-brother to dual Group One winners Glamour Puss and Vision and Power. Waikato (Pins) wins the Jumbo Jet Trophy Sing-3 for the second time. Garry & Mary Chittick, and Mark & Lisa Chittick carry off four trophies at the Mercedes Thoroughbred Awards including Garry's fifth New Zealand Breeder of the Year title, and the inaugural Centaine Award, won fittingly by his successor O'Reilly. Daffodil is P WAIKATO STUD named Champion Three-Year-Old, and New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year. September -- Major success in three countries is this month's theme. Daffodil comes back blooming in the HBRI Hawke's Bay Challenge. S. Gr. 1: Vigor (O'Reilly) wins the VRC Makybe Diva S. Gr 2; and Warrentherooster makes it three first-crop stakeswinners for Savabeel when he races away with the Wanganui Guineas LR. No Excuse Needed gets his 7th stakeswinner when three-year-old filly Masquerade wins the ARC Soliloquy S. LR. Waikato wins the Kranji Mile Sing-1 for trainer and owner Laurie Laxon, beating stablemate Big Maverick (O'Reilly) into second. October -- Big Maverick turns the tables in the Raffles Cup Sing-1, taking the lion's share of the prizemoney, with Waikato finishing third. November -- Katie Lee supplies the highlight of a great week for Pins when she beats the boys in the $1 million CJC NZ 2000 Guineas Gr. 1, going on to complete a historic double in the 1000 Guineas. KARAKA 2010 STANDOUTS: Mark Chittick says, "We have a very good even draft -- I'm very proud of the lot." UNDER THE RADAR PICKS: Mark's message to buyers is simple: "Come and have a look - they'll be there!" AT THE END OF SALE DAY: "When it finally comes, it's a couple of cold ones, then home for some peace and quiet." RACING HIGHLIGHT OF 2009: "Vision And Power winning the Doncaster Handicap, then 40 minutes later our own Daffodil winning the AJC Oaks with such authority."
