Bluebloods : Karaka 2010 Yearling Sale Preview
42 O'REILLY, sire of Beltana yearlings in the Karaka 2010 Premier Draft. ith a 100% O'Reilly-sired draft at Karaka 2010, Beltana Stud's Richard Rutherford is obviously a big fan of Waikato Stud's champion sire. And why not? He bred and co-owns O'Reilly's gorgeous and admirable daughter, O'Reilly Rose (ex Rose World by Grosvenor), winner of nine races and almost $300,000, including the Otago RC White Robe Lodge H. Gr. 3 and three Listed stakes races. She also ran third to Mac'oreilly and Sir Slick in the 2009 ARC New Zealand S. Gr. 1. Richard explains, "O'Reilly's progeny race over all distances, and although he leaves a range of types, they're all good-looking horses, that are good to deal with." That tractability is important when you're a one-man horse breeding and sales operation based on a beautiful 5000-acre sheep and beef property in North Canterbury. He also appreciates the personal support he receives from the two studs his four broodmares regularly visit. "My mares and foals always come back home from Cambridge and Waikato Studs looking well, and well-handled. Patrick Hogan and the Chitticks are very supportive at Karaka too, they are extremely good to me." Richard is equally grateful for the encouragement of his partner of eight years, Dinny Richards. "She's a great support to me." O'Reilly Rose, passed in at the 2005 New Zealand Premier Sale, happens to be a member of her sire's best crop to date, the 136 foals born in 2003. Eleven of them have become stakeswinners, two at Group One level, Guyno and Maco'reilly, and their collective earnings exceed $A11.5 million. In all the son of Last Tycoon and Courtza has left 44 stakeswinners -- seven Group One -- from 668 named foals (to mid- November 2009). The O'Reilly-Grosvenor cross responsible for O'Reilly Rose has produced another three Group winners: full siblings Gr. 1 The Jewel and Gr. 3 The One, and Gr. 2 Kerry O'Reilly. Although Richard hopes there's more to come in O'Reilly Rose's racing career, she is destined to become Beltana Stud's fifth broodmare when she retires. Anticipating that, Richard has extended his racing interests to the Lee Freedman stable in Melbourne, where he has a share in Andromache, a two-year-old Charge Forward daughter of champion South African filly Mythical Play. Despite Beltana Stud's distance from the centre of New Zealand's modern breeding industry, Richard believes it is a special place to raise stock, including horses, and when the seasons are kind, it can be as heavenly as the region's name, Parnassus, implies. This year has been particularly good. "We've had a magnificent spring here, the best for 30 or forty years, with sensational grass growth." Four generations of Richard's family have farmed in North Canterbury, buying, breeding and selling quality livestock for more than one hundred years. Richard and his mother Marie, who died four years W BELTANA STUD ago, sold their first yearling at Trentham in 1976, and since 1999 Beltana has achieved at least one six-figure sale each year, with a top price of $600,000 achieved in 2008. Healthy sale prices are important, but Richard's strongest motivation for breeding horses is the competitiveness of the sport. "I enjoy the challenge of trying to breed horses that can compete with other people's best horses." THE BELTANA DRAFT: O'Reilly-Shemiyra colt -- "He's a racy, medium-sized colt, a magnificent type." Purchased in Europe, Shemiyra is by In the Wings out of French Group One winner Shemaka, from the family of dual Derby winner Shahrastani, all descended from one of the Aga Khan's foundation mares, Pale Ale. O'Reilly-Volkrose colt -- "A three-quarter brother to O'Reilly Rose, he's a big, strong, correct colt, more typical of O'Reilly's progeny." This is a family Beltana Stud has had for many years, and has also produced Caulfield Cup Gr. 1 winner Affinity. O'Reilly-Danadevi filly -- "She's a compact, medium-sized, Danehill type of filly." Danadevi is a full sister to champion filly and Golden Slipper Gr. 1 winner Ha Ha, from the family of champion two-year-old and leading sire Rory's Jester, who also won the Golden Slipper.
