Bluebloods : Karaka 2010 Yearling Sale Preview
31 1949 bay gelding Alonzo (GB) --Faster (Mr Standfast) 65 starts from 2 to 7: 24 wins, 19 placings £66,765 Hellion (49.5 kg) and Gay Helios (44 kg) -- and backed up three days later to win the one-and-a- half-mile VRC C.B. Fisher Plate at weight-for-age. The following year Rising Fast lined up in the Caulfield Cup with 61.5 kg and delivered a seriously dominant performance to win by three lengths. On a dead track his time was fractionally faster than Viewed's time 44 years later, and he gave the equivalent of 5.5 kg and 14.5 kg to the two horses behind him, Ray Ribbon and Historic Era. What happened at his next start, in the 1955 Melbourne Cup, is now a treasured, if poignant part of the race's great heritage. Asked to carry 63.5 kg in his attempt to complete the "double-double", Rising Fast was buffeted at least three times during the running and was six wide as Toparoa (48 kg) broke clear on the home turn. Mustering every ounce of his courage, Rising Fast made ground on Toparoa all the way up the straight, but his rough run and the punishing weight finally told, and he was just three-quarters of a length short of victory. Leicester Spring wrote in the chapter he titled simply "Robbed": Rising Fast did not deserve to have his greatness or his immortal fame, already soundly achieved, questioned in any degree following the incidents of the day...His effort to prevail, in spite of the obstacles placed in his way, in addition to his weight, will never die in the memories of people who saw his race. He was inducted to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2002, and joined the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2008. 1983 grey mare Three Legs (GB)-Malt (Moss Trooper), 40 starts from 3 to 7: 17 wins from 1200m to 2400m, 12 placings NZ$3,411,682, A$625,000 Viewed is clearly an outstanding stayer, but Rising Fast's superlative record remains a challenge unmet by any Caulfield or Melbourne Cup winner of the past 55 years.
