Bluebloods : Karaka 2010 Yearling Sale Preview
24 THE HECKLER The Karaka Million lays down an irresistible challenge to buyers and owners: put up your judgment and money at Karaka and come to Ellerslie Racecourse, Auckland 12 months later to compete for $1 million. Making the field is exciting enough -- winning it brings the satisfaction of pulling off an audacious bet. As Alistair Sutherland, part-owner of 2009 Karaka Million winner The Heckler, says "It's a great thrill. I've won a few Group One races, but winning this race is a special thrill." The first two runnings of the Karaka Million offer a few clues -- albeit from a very small sample - about the kind of horse capable of making the field. Despite the conclusions that can be drawn from this summary, the results of the first two Karaka Million races offer plenty of encouragement to buyers operating within a wide range of budgets, sale and breeding preferences. Owners and trainers with their eye on the 2011 race can fire up their ambition by attending the 2010 Karaka Million at the Auckland Racing Club's twilight meeting, at Ellerslie racecourse on Sunday 31 January -- the eve of the 2010 New Zealand Premier Sale. Twilight summer racing at Ellerslie has proved a hit with a new generation of racegoers who can enjoy top-class racing in a beautiful, historic location, and sophisticated hospitality packages on the Champagne Lawn ($140 per person), in the Chairman's Club, ($70 per person) and the Lindauer Lawn Party ($30 per person). The Karaka Million programme includes the first running of the $200,000 Karaka Three-Year-Old Mile which gives owners of qualified horses from the 2008 sale a second chance to win major prizemoney. That opportunity will also be available to the buyers of horses purchased at Karaka 2010. The subsequent form of several runners in each of the first two years has franked the quality of the Karaka Million fields. The 2008 field included that season's Mercedes Champion Two- Year-Old Il Quello Veloce, San Bernardino (Group 3 winner at three, stakeswinner at four, Group One- placed at two), Group One-placed stakeswinner Raid and Singapore winner Noble Manor. The 2009 winner The Heckler also claimed the Mercedes Two-Year-Old title after winning the MRC Manawatu Sires' Produce S. Gr. 1. Other 2009 runners included this season's outstanding three- year-old Katie Lee (the first filly to win the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas-2000 Guineas double), Kaaptan (ARC Sires' Produce S. Gr. 1), T KARAKA MILLION: AN IRRESISTIBLE CHALLENGE SEX 16 colts & geldings 12 fillies SIRES Pins-3 Stravinsky - 3 Volksraad -- 3 No Excuse Needed -- 2 Spartacus - 2 DAMSIRE Centaine -- 2 Danehill -- 2 Gold Brose - 2 VENDORS Windsor Park Stud -- 4 Hallmark Stud -- 3 Esker Lodge -- 2 The Oaks Stud - 2 Waikato Stud -- 2 Westbury Stud - 2 SALES NZ Premier -- 12 NZ Select -- 13 NZ Festival -- 1 NZ Carnival - 2 PRICES Up to $50,000 -- 7 $51,000-$99,000 -- 10 $100,000-$199,000 -- 5 $200,000+ - 6 KARAKA MILLION REPRESENTATION, 2008 & 2009 Total: 28 runners 2009 KARAKA MILLIONS 1.
