Bluebloods : December 2009
THE Atkinsons' Furlong stud, a consistent source of quality performers located near Greenmount on Queensland's Darling Downs, is offering Mitanni's half-sister at the Gold Coast yearling sale. A Brisbane sprinter-1600m performer with an iron constitution, Mitanni was one of the early products of Furlong Stud and his half-sister is by Queensland's leading sire Show a Heart. Mitanni, a Danewin gelding, is still a threat at the races as a 10 year-old and he had appeared 85 times through to mid-November for 20 wins, 12 seconds, 15 thirds and $1,190,000. His principal wins include the QTC Sir Byrne Hart Stakes-Gr.2, Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes-LR and Sunshine Coast Summer Cup-LR. He holds the Eagle Farm track record for 1300m. Mitanni is one of seven winners, all her runners, from And a Hug, an Ivor Prince (USA) (by Sir Ivor) winner of seven races and third in the Queensland Oaks-Gr.1. Her grandam Wish Me Well (Roy Bridge (GB)) has held the Eagle Farm record for 900m for more than 30 years. The other foals from And a Hug include the yearling's sister Hindsight (Brisbane winner and stakes placed) and half relations Proud Native (eight wins, successful Brisbane) and More Than Hugs (five wins, including outings in Brisbane and Sydney). More Than Hugs is by Irgun (USA) (Sunny's Halo-Late From Lunch by Secretariat), a lightly raced American Gr.1 and Gr.2 winner who briefly shuttled to Furlong Stud. Using Irgun the stud bred Brief Embrace, one of the best Australian juvenile fillies of 2001-02, a year her six outings comprised wins in the MRC Debutante Stakes-LR (by 2.25 lens on debut) and MRC Blue Diamond Prelude-Gr.3, seconds in the MRC Blue Diamond Preview-Gr.3 and Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 (a head), a third in the STC Reisling Slipper Stakes-Gr.2 and a sixth in the STC Golden Slipper-Gr.1 (1.75 lens). She went on to win twice more at Caulfield, including a Listed event, finish second in the VRC Linlithgow Stakes-Gr.2, SAJC Swettenham Stakes-Gr.2 (short head) and BTC Classic-Gr.3 and fifth of 14 in the VRC Salinger Stakes-Gr.1 before retirement to Furlong. From Tranquil Love, a winner of 10 sprint races including three in Brisbane, Brief Embrace looks poised now to bring new success for the stud as the dam of a Flying Spur colt in the Gold Coast sale draft. Brief Embrace's sire Irgun is the sire of the dam of the very promising Brisbane two year-old Fusette. She is by Falvelon, the sire also of another colt to be offered by Furlong Stud. This colt's homebred dam, Miss Diaz (Success Express (USA)), a relation of Golden Slipper winner Tontonan, won five races, including three in Melbourne. Two other Furlong yearlings whose qualifications highlight the stud as a good source of quality performers are the Hussonet (USA) filly from the Danewin Listed winner Trail of Gold and an Al Maher filly from the Marauding winner Honi. Both mares have produced stakes winners. Trail of Gold is the dam of a brother to her yearling in Gold Trail, a winner of six races and $451,380. His performances include wins in the AJC The Shorts-Gr.2 and STC Canterbury Classic- LR, seconds in the STC Expressway Stakes-Gr.2 and Missile Stakes-Gr.3 and a third in the AJC The Galaxy- Gr.1. The Al Maher filly from Honi is a half-sister to Paprika, a current General Nediym filly who went within a neck of winning all her five starts at two. A short priced favourite in all five, she won four in succession, appearances at Toowoomba (6.5 lengths on debut), Eagle Farm (0.25 lengths), Eagle Farm (1.25 lengths, McDougall Stakes-LR) and Doomben (two lengths, Smith Slipper-LR) and then finished a neck second at the Gold Coast in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. The Furlong Stud draft also includes two fillies in the first crop of Eureka Stud's Gr.1 winner Red Dazzler (Red Ransom (USA)-Vain Hill by Danehill), a prominent Australian sprinter-1600m performer, and a colt by Snippetson, the smart Snippets sprinter standing at Widden Stud. The fact that the Atkinsons have bred gallopers of the calibre of Mitanni, Brief Embrace, Paprika and Gold Trail at Furlong Stud suggests the stud's 2010 consignment is a likely source of good winners.
